Grace takes on the identity of her brother Henry in order to survive in the confederate ranks during the Civil War. Virginia Klaising, a grieving widow, saves Henry's life. In UNION the two are reunited at the end of the war. Haunted by the horror of war and a mercy killing, Henry is once again rescued by Virginia. He redeems himself through her love and the 'grace' of gratitude.
